The Lord of Seshachalam

The Lord of Shesachala

It was a spring day in Vaikunta. Lord Vishnu was reclining. Lakshmi Devi was as usual sitting near his feet. The Lord and his consort were busy discussing certain worldly affairs. The Devi asked him “Lord, you had appeared as many avatars and even as a human avatar to help mankind and also to guide them. The most difficult of ages, the Kaliyug has started. You did a poorna avatar as Krishna and gave the precious Bhagavad Gita to mankind. But shouldn’t you be helping them when they need you the most?” The Lord smiled and remained silent. He gave a meaningful look at the magnificent snake who was guarding the entrance Adisesha also known as the Sheshanag and smiled.

At that moment Vayu Bhagavan was coming towards Vaikunta. He thought to himself “Its been awhile since I served Lord Vishnu. Let me pay my respects to the Lord and Devi by blowing some cool breeze that can make them happy.” In his focus on entering Vaikunta, Lord Vayu did not notice Adisesha. He tried to cross over the threshold without taking permission from the giant Naga. He heard an angry hissing sound and turned to see a furious Adisesha.

The devout guard asked “Where are you going?” Vayu Bhagavan was a little irritated. He looked at Adisesha and said “Can you not see Sesha? I am going to see the Lord and the Devi.” Seshanaag replied “No. You cannot. The Lord and Devi are in ekaanth (alone) and discussing important matters.” Now Vayu was getting impatient.  “Why don’t you go and tell them that I have come.” Adisesha was unmoved. “Wait for sometime. When the Lord calls me inside I will tell him.”

It became a battle of ego now. Vayu said “Who are you to let me in? I will go past you.” Seshanaag hissed “Do try if you can.” This argument turned into a loud fight after a few minutes. Lord Vishnu heard the commotion and came out. He saw that his loyal guard Seshanaag trying to encircle Vayu and Vayu escaping him. Vishnu intervened and said “This is not a fair fight. Sesha why don’t you go and encircle the Ananda hill, a branch of the Mount Kailasha range.

The Gods realised that Lord Vishnu was upto one of his leelas (drama or play enacted for the benefit of the universe). Everyone from Shiva, Brahma, Indra and the rishis watched. Adisesha went and encircled the Ananda Mountain. He was very sure of his power and did not worry about Vayu blowing him away.

On the other hand, Lord Vayu first blew as a gentle breeze on Lord Vishnu. Vishnu smiled and gave him his blessings. Then Vayu went towards Seshanaag to blow him off the Ananda mountain. The more he tried to blow the snake, the more the snake was angry. He held onto the mountain and was blowing out poison.

The entire universe was trembling at the hot poisonous fumes coming
from Adisesha’s mouth and nostrils. Finally the Gods prayed to Lord Vishnu and Vishnu told his loyal devotee Adisesha to relent. The moment his Lord commanded, Adisesha loosened his grip on the Ananda mountain. He was blown away along with the Ananda mountain were blown by Lord Vayu and they fell on the banks of the River Swanamukhi.

Aidsesha was upset that he had lost the contest to Varuna on who was more powerful. Lord Vishnu appeased him and said that he will be permanently be stationed on top of his head as Lord Venkatesa in the Kailyug.

Hearing that he was going to have the blessing of the Lord adorning his head, Adisesha merged with the Ananda hill and the entire range became the Seshadri hills. On his hood stood Lord Ventakeshwara at Tirupati as promised. On his trunk stood Lord Narasimha at the Ahobilam range. At his tail range stood the Mallikarjuna swamy along with his consort Devi Brahamarambika.

Adisesha was proud that instead of being the bed for his Lord in Vaikunta, he was able to support the various manifestations of the Lord in bhuloka and benefit the millions who came with their requests, worries and desires to him every minute of every day.

Devi Lakshmi looked at her consort and smiled. She realised that this entire divine drama was for the Lord to prepare Seshanaag to be ready for his coming to bhuloka as Lord Venkatesa to bless his devotees.

Ohm Namo Narayana!! Govinda!! Govinda!
